TWD - Apple Chedder Scones

 apple%20cheddar%20scones.jpg

It’s been hot and steamy here in the Netherlands today; not really baking weather, but it seems that many of my fellow TWD’rs are suffering similar weather. Having grown up in Kansas where it’s common to have 90+ temperatures in the summers with a similar percentage of humidity, I personally like it hot and steamy, it suits me; or at least it does when everything goes as it should.

TWD - Mixed Berry Cobbler(s)

My%20dream%20dessert_round.jpg

It’s that time again and I don’t mean “business time” (that’s Wednesdays); it’s Tuesdays with Dorie time! This week’s recipe is nothing French or fancy, involves no complicated prep work, and is in my eyes the homiest and most delicious of American fruit desserts, and my personal favorite, the cobbler; Mixed Berry Cobbler to be precise, as chosen by Beth of Our Sweet Life. I want to give a big shout-out to Beth for picking this recipe, because I am crazy about cobblers!

TWD - The Peppermint Cream Puff Ring That Wasn't

 Piping%20choux2.jpg

Well ladies and gentlemen; let’s just say that things didn’t go as planned. I knew as soon as I read the recipe for the Peppermint Cream Puff Ring, I wasn’t feeling the mint/cream/chocolate combo. I also knew that I had two birthday parties (it seems never ending at the moment), but that this dessert wouldn’t be suitable for either, as one was a late night affair and required a trip out of town. As I didn’t want a big ring of cream filled choux pastry lying around tempting us, I decided that I’d make profiterole sized puffs, which would make them easier to transport to work where either E or I could foist them onto our respective colleagues.

Late with my Cream Puffs

Ladies and gentlemen,

Blame the UEFA Cup, blame the fact that I'm totally busy trying to rent out the apartment that I own, the fact that work is especially demanding at the moment, or the fact that Aunt Flo is in town, but  my Tuesdays with Dorie post is going to be tardy. I've had my lesson in pâte à choux, but the photos are still on the camera and I'm watching France vs. Italy.

Please check back and in the meantime check out what my fellow TWD'rs got up to this week.

TWD - La Palette's Strawberry Tartlettes

 Plated%20dessert_round.jpg

The story of how my mother craved strawberries all through her pregnancy with me has always been seen in my family as the reason for my undying love of this juicy red berry; and whether or not my love affair with the strawberry started in vitro or as a child, strawberries have always been my first love, fruit wise. My childhood is peppered with the memories of my strawberry passion, of bright red slices of strawberries in the shape of an M on my birthday cake, strawberry shortcakes made with my mother’s buttery biscuits; a day spent picking strawberries in a field of an acquaintance, which nearly broke my limber 16-year old back.

For this week’s recipe, Marie of A Year in Oak Cottage, chose La Palette’s Strawberry Tart, which is Dorie Greenspan’s version of her favorite dessert from the like named Latin Quarter café in Paris. Oh, to be in Paris right now…

TWD - French Chocolate Brownies

 French%20brownies%20destined%20for%20my%20colleagues_round.jpg

Dorie Greenspan has a way of making even me, who ardently claims not to be crazy about chocolate, crazy about chocolate. When I read that Di of Di’s Kitchen Notebook had chosen French Chocolate Brownies for this weeks TWD recipe, I was lukewarm about the idea of brownies, but happy to have a simple recipe after my L'Opéra adventure and the two day, two part Pecan Honey Sticky Buns recipe from last week's TWD rotation. I don't consider myself much of a brownie lover, and even though Dorie herself says that these aren't really brownies; I was a bit shocked when I saw that the recipe included raisins! Huh, raisins in brownies?! I'd call myself a borderline raisin hater, meaning I won't gag if I have to eat them, but they certainly don't make me shiver with delight. This was definitely going to be one for the colleagues, or at least, so I thought.

TWD - Pecan Honey Sticky Buns

Sticky%20Honey%20Pecan%20Buns_round.jpg

Today I am celebrating being 34 years young!  So this past weekend, my weekly TWD baking project was something of an after-thought in light of my other big project: my birthday cake (stay tuned for that story tomorrow). Having made Dorie's brioche recipe when the Brioche Raisin Snails was chosen for TWD's recipe rotation a few months back, I wasn't at all nervous about tackling the brioche which could arguably be the most challenging part of this recipe, and everything was smooth sailing. My only complaint about this recipe, if you could call it that, is a timing issue that relates more to my habits then to the recipe itself. You can have the dough rolled out, smeared, sprinkled, rolled and cut in no time flat; but unless you're an early riser, which I'm not, it's pretty near impossible to get the buns on the table for breakfast/brunch because of the rising time of just under two hours. A luxury problem with a simple solution on my part, n'est-ce pas?
